About farm: The visionary behind Danche Washing Station is Negusse Debela. Before stepping into the coffee industry, he ran a highly successful computer parts import business in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia. In 2008, Negusse made a bold career shift and founded SNAP Specialty Coffee. He traveled extensively across southern Ethiopia’s coffee‑growing regions, devoting himself to researching cultivation and processing techniques, with an ambition to bring Ethiopian coffee to the world’s highest‑level specialty coffee stage. In 2019, Negusse purchased the washing station in the small village of Danche. Sitting at an altitude of 2,000‑2,200 meters, the area features a large diurnal temperature variation. Coffee cherries ripen slowly, retaining intense notes of ripe peach and jasmine fragrance. The soil here is mineral‑rich red earth. Coffee trees grow interspersed with banana plants and tall shade trees, creating a nearly perfect semi‑forest ecosystem. Danche coffee does not originate from one single large plantation. Instead, it is sourced from roughly 400 to 800 local smallholder farmers in surrounding communities. During harvest season, farmers hand‑pick perfectly ripe, deep‑red coffee cherries and deliver them promptly to Danche Washing Station. |
