About farm: This coffee comes from Finca La Esmeralda, located in Acevedo, Huila, Colombia, and carefully managed by Norbey Quimbayo and his wife. The farm spans 12 hectares, with 5 hectares dedicated to coffee production. In addition to coffee, Norbey cultivates plantain and fruit trees such as lime and citrus, supporting biodiversity and farm sustainability. The estate is less than an hour's drive from Pitalito, one of Huila's key coffee hubs. Huila is widely recognized as one of Colombia's most important specialty coffee regions. Its combination of fertile soils, high elevations, and favorable microclimates allows coffees to develop vibrant fruit character and exceptional complexity. For this reason, Huila has long been a focus region for specialty coffee sourcing, offering constant discoveries and outstanding quality. Norbey inherited the farm from his father approximately 27 years ago. Like many producers at the time, the family initially focused on commercial coffee production. However, following the 2006 global financial crisis and subsequent drop in coffee prices, profits declined significantly. Seeking a sustainable future, Norbey enrolled in the Colombian Coffee Institute, where he studied agronomy and post-harvest processing, learning new methods to improve quality and add value to his coffee. The decision to shift toward specialty coffee production proved transformative. Since making this change, Norbey has achieved higher premiums for his coffees and gained international recognition for their quality. Today, Finca La Esmeralda stands as a testament to dedication, education, and the pursuit of excellence—producing expressive coffees that showcase the best of Acevedo and the Huila terroir. About variety: Caturron is a relatively new and locally prized variety emerging from the Acevedo/Huila region. It is believed to be a mutation of Caturra or born from local experimental research efforts, and is now increasingly favored by growers for its distinctive large cherries, intense fruit potential, and leaf rust resilience. |
