About Farm: Gedeb is located in the southeastern corner of Ethiopia’s Gedeo Zone, bordering the Guji region, and its coffee boasts a distinctive flavor profile. Banko Chelchele, a community in eastern Gedeb, is home to both cooperative members and various independent washing stations, many of which are named after the local town of Chelchele. With its high altitude, the coffee from this area is exceptionally intense in flavor. Natural-processed beans exhibit a perfume-like volatile aroma. The Banko Chelchele washing station is independently operated by Azeb Tadesse. Her facility spans two hectares and employs up to 200 workers during the harvest season. Fresh coffee cherries are received around the clock and meticulously sorted for ripeness and uniformity. Qualified cherries are spread in a single layer on raised drying beds, where they dry under the sun for 3–6 weeks, reaching a final moisture content of 11.5%. Once dried, the coffee is hulled locally before being transported to Addis Ababa. There, Tadesse Desta Import and Export conducts color sorting and manual grading to ensure export-quality standards. |
